A Tale of Two Mexicos

See the videos below. One is produced in English to encourage tourists to visit the region and the other is a Latin American news channel reporting on the incredible fightback by teachers and students against proposed compulsory English classes in local school curriculum.

There is a short report about the amazing action taken by students and teachers here in December’s edition of El Gazette (free email subscription required).

It seems the community were more interested in teaching indigenous languages than making themselves attractive for foreign investment. Some people just don’t know their place.

Maybe you could show them both to your students (be they language learners or trainee teachers) and ask: what exactly is the role of English for development purposes?
